Irony

Irony

Irony is an implied discrepancy between what is said and what is meant.

A good example of irony is a poem named "Richard Cory" by Edwin Arlington Robinson. In this poem "Richard Cory" "was a gentleman from sole to crown, Clean favored, and imperially slim." He was also "rich--yes, richer than a king", people also thought he " was everything To make us wish that we were in his place." But then Richard Cory "one calm summer night, Went home and put a bullet through his head." This story is very ironic because everyone thought he was happy and would've love to be in his shoes, but then he put a bullet through his head.

Lamb to the Slaughter

In this short story "Lamb to the Slaughter" By Roald Dahl, Mary Maloney was deeply in love with her husband, she waited for him to come from work. "Now and again she would glance up at the clock, but without anxiety, merely to please herself with the thought that each minute gone by made it nearer the time when he would come." When he arrived she greeted him with joy, "For her, this was always a blissful time of day," and made herself and him some drinks. "She loved him for the way he sat loosely in a chair, for the way he came in a door, or moved slowly across the room with long strides. She loved intent, far look in his eyes when they rested in her, the funny shape of the mouth, and especially the way he remained silent about' his tiredness, sitting still with himself until the whiskey had taken some of it away." He finished his drink got up and made himself a stronger one. "If you're too tired to eat out, she went on, it's still not too late. There's plenty of meat and stuff in the freezer, and you can have it right here and not even move out of the chair. Her eyes waited on him for an answer, a smile, a little nod, but he made no sign. Anyway, she went on, I'll get you some cheese and crackers first. I don't want it, he said." Her told her to sit, because he had something to tell her. At this point she was worried and afraid. "This is going to be a bit of a shock to you, I'm afraid, he said. But I've thought about it a good deal and Ive decided the only thing to do is tell you right away. I hope you won't blame me too much. And he told her. It didn't take long, four or five minutes at most, and she stayed very still through it all, watching him with a kind of dazed horror as he went further and further away from her with each word." Mary was in kind of shock, her first instinct was to not believe it. she got up and went to the kitchen to cook dinner and she put her hand in the fridge, first thing she found was a leg a lamb. "All right then, they would have lamb for supper. She carried it upstairs, holding the thin bone-end of it with both her hands, and as she went through the living-room, she saw him standing over by the window with his back to her, and she stopped." he refused her to make him super. "At that point, Mary Maloney simply walked up behind him and without any pause she swung the big frozen leg of lamb high in the air and brought it down as hard as she could on the back of his head." She knew her penalty as a detectives wife, so she stood and thought quickly. She went to the kitchen and put the leg of lamb in a pan and put it in the oven. After that Mary went upstairs and got dressed up and headed out to the grocery to buy vegetables for the supper. When she got home she saw her husband laying dead and call the police quickly, they arrived and she explained her made up story. After a while of investigating they found no metal object that her husband could of been hit with. As Mary saw them search and search she decided to offer them the supper she was making, at first they refuse and she told them she didn't want to put the supper to waste and they looked very tired and hungry. So they gave in and ate the lamb. "And in the other room, Mary Maloney began to giggle." This story had big irony in it, she loved him and would wait for him to come from work. One day he came and he was odd and told her she was leaving him, she killed him with his favorite leg of lamb and cooked it and fed it to the officers he worked with.

The House that Slaves Built

The article " The House That Slaves Built" by Gardiner Harris is very ironic because, in the White House black people or slaves were not allowed in, or even to visit, but they were the ones who put in all their hard work in building it. It is also ironic because now 200 years later President Barack Obama a black man lives there with his wife and kids.

This cartoon is very ironic because the man is saying he doesn't believe in fate and all the garbage about when your time has come..." but then a big piece of wood with a clock is about to hit him the head. It's ironic because his "time" to die has come and he's talking about how he doesn't believe in fate.

Irony is a pretense of ignorance and of willingness to learn from another assumed in order to make the other's false conceptions conspicuous. I've seen many ironic things in my life. For example the time when i saw a homeless person with a big card board piece of box and it said "I can't afford a sign".
